I'm guessing one of your metal detectorist friends, lucky sod. Very nice late neolithic/early Bronze age barbed and tanged arrowhead.

yep a detecting chap - i like to see the authentic items as its interesting to see how it compares to todays knapping, i like the way the 2 sides have a slight curve almost the same.

Yes I always notice that, how they were using a completely different flaking techniques to the ones we use today to achieve a very similar end result. Of course knappers back then used a wide range of methods, as do knappers nowadays and the methods overlap, but I'm still surprised by how little they overlap. I wonder, mostly when we learn to knap we from the outset are trying to make ornamental pieces so develop methods to suit, however prehistoric peoples would have made functional ones so similarly developed methods to suit, and later some of these knappers would have moved on to make ornamental ones too and perhaps simply developed what they were already doing rather than creating a whole new technique specific to the job.
