Flint knapping demo at Gressenhall museum

Post by mr.hertzian cone on Sat Jun 08, 2013 9:28 pm

I am knapping at an event for the festival of archaeology week.
The talk and practical event will be held at Gressenhall museum, farm and workhouse near Dearham in Norfolk.
The focus will be on pressure flaking with antler tips and steel as I'm intending the subject to be "The arrowheads of Otzi and Ishi" with a tag line of: Arrowheads of flint and glass from the Late Neolithic to the early 1900's.
The day is Sunday July 14.
It would be damn good to see some interested folk like you chaps there and there is also the possibility that if if any of you could make it... We could try to make it an unofficial "Knap in".
It's a beutiful place with loads of space and an oldie worldie farm attached with a small display of Mesolithic to Bronze age atifacts, the main focus of the museum is farming, rural life and the history of the workhouse.
We/I will be based in a large marquee so if it rains, then so what!

As for the poss knap in, I'll see what I can do.
I'll have a chat with the organiser on Monday so if anyone is interested, or any questions please feel free post!

P.s the public transport there and back is fairly rubbish.

That's great your first professional engagement. I see if I can make it, too early at the moment to give a definite answer.

Well, not the first. I've done the last two years, last time it was that spear.

" />The demo and talk went well. This is me at the end of the day after the visitors had left, with an arrowhead in the otzi style (not that you can really see it!). We had about 500 visitors through the gates in the end.Very Happy

At last a face to the words.

Nice display, looks very professional, good diversity of material, a handling box and a talk too. Did you sell stuff too or get any orders?

Excellent array of stuff for the demo, and i'm glad it went well.

And you have a face??? I thought of you as a disembodied pair of hands and knees, just like in the pics

I had him down for younger, non-carroty and fatter. Then again I know someone by the same name who looks like this.

He has hair AND it's not grey.  You dont get any younger than that, but then i gave up on my hair at 21.

I also thought that you had spock ears and one giant eye with a super fast blink reflex for safer knapping.

I am about to do another knapping demo at Kings Lynn museum in Norfolk this Saturday 10:30 to 3:30 if anyone fancies a visit?
It's a small museum but does house the reconstructed timbers from Sea Henge amongst other lovelies.

Ooh! that's a good one, just think of all those sovereign rings falling into the sand when the sun bathers whip up the towels when it starts to rain!

I'd love to have come but too short notice to be allowed to use my car. If you do any more try and give us a bit of advance warning and I try and make it.

Not this time, I forgot to pack the camera, they did have the oddest little beaker dagger on display which I would have liked to have shot some photos of.

That's a shame, you have my curiosity up now about how this dagger looked.
