The theory is that part of the make up of the stone is water and the nodules if they are out of the chalk has had a chance to dry out, thus making it more brittle and soaking puts some of this natural water content back. In practice I found that it made little noticable difference to the knapping of the flint although it did help with keeping the dust down a bit.

I've seen a vid, maybe the same one.

From what I understand water treating works better on some rocks than other. The courser the grain and poor quality the rock the better the effect. One theory is it helps carry the shockwave across the gaps between grains.

My main worry would be if using antler is the water softening it.

The second vid does have a little more water involved than I was planning to use. There again, I do live in Scotland.Very Happy

I think I may start leaving some flint outside and see what happens.

Just reading a book where an eyewitness at the times reports the Brandon knappers told him they keep their flints damp, but not because they knap better, but because it stops their black colour from fading, and they sell better.
