Birch Tree Tapping
I'm sure Scalla is an expert, this is something I have always wanted to try. This is an excellent instructional vid, however he seems to say it's ok to take a lot more than Ray Mears suggested.
Re: Birch Tree Tapping
I've only done it for a little drink while having a rest walking and then plugged the tree again - i've never collected the stuff, or made booze from it - i'll watch the vid a little later

Re: Birch Tree Tapping
I've drunk tree sap a few times. At Ankor Wat they have people standing beside tapped trees with a tin cups and you can buy a cupful. Also in India I drank palm toddy that naturally ferments in a few hours, it's sweet and a few percent on the same day but each day more of the sugar turns to alcohol and after 4-5 days it's up to 15-20% and really sour.

had a few goes myself in the spring when the sap is rising.
