Three Antler Rings

Post by skalla on Sat Sep 21, 2013 7:26 pm

I spent a little time making this afternoon and ended up with these... not properly finished as i will sand them more finely then buff them up i think, but i reckon that they look real nice as they are so i thought i'd share them as they are:

Quickly and easily made with a hacksaw, knife and dremel!

It could! They've had a bit more sanding/shaping and a polish now

A cool idea, and they do still use them though sadly i doubt that they engage in quite the same unsupervised recklessness that i enjoyed as a cub and scout.

Ah, the knives, booze, airguns and landrover thefts of my youth!

When I was in Cubs we used to go 2.2 rifle shooting at the local army base, I bet that's off the agenda these days>

Now that is kinda impressive.

with your aviation & preppie skills and me and B's shooting skills the cubs has readied us to mount a guerilla war against the state.

Not sure how true it was, but heard the scouts were just after dad's army as a line of defence in ww2. Probs is I guess, considering Mafeking.

I made quite a few more antler rings last week, i think i've made about 18 all in all now - i used a couple of my antler batons!  These are all by hand - hacksaw, knife and sandpaper. They dont take long to make once you get used to the process, even the most carefully finished take less than an hour.  I've gifted some and sold a few to some folk who admired one that i was wearing.  I've been reading about using SuperGlue/CyanoAcryllate as a finish on wood and antler and may try this out on one.  Carefully.

As my hacksaw got blunter, the cuts got less straight but that led to some interesting shapes, as did the changing dimensions of the antler as it got thinner and less round.  They take on a nice polish just by hand with up to 600 grit and oil/wax, but i'll have to get a some buffers for drills etc and polishing compound at some point, i've seen gorgeously shiny ones for inspiration.
