flint core

I spent the weekend in norfolk / suffolk border detecting and found this flint core - i am suprised i saw it amongst the field flint - however most was a light blue so it stood out, looks like a core for knapping small blades. 

its about 60mm in length. so quite small.

I wonder what age it is?

It's a blade core of some sort, could have been a big one just reduced to a small one after a lot of blade removal, hard to tell from the pic, would depend how far round the cortex goes. Age-wise these things were made for an awful long time, however it doesn't have much of a patina so may be younger rather than older. I'll ask some people who may be able to elaborate.

quite right, I'd put it down as a worked out core from the Neolithic to Bronze Age. It looks hard hammer struck.

thank you for the replies, i just love to find these artefacts - when i picked it up i wondered if it was one mr H had thrown from his car window on the way home from the pub - he he ,

i dont think it would of started out to big but i guess its hard to tell.

He he! not one of mine I assure you. I can see why the knapper had stopped at this point, there are a couple of step or hinge fractures just below the platform which would have buggered up any more decent blades coming from this core, that and its small size.
