Just say hello

Post by ligera on Sun Oct 25, 2015 7:42 pm

Hello to everybody
I'm an italian man and I like do experimental archeology, and particularly in flintknapping and archery. In Italy there isn't forum like this where people may to chat about this "hobby". I follow you often and I have many question or matter to discuss but i have languages problem. The first two are this:
I wacth here a video with inside a big "machine" for made flint blade. May I find more abuot it? Id like to try my personal replica.
Second matter. Today I try to hafting an axe just with flint chisel, another flint axe and fire but I don't know if I do a god job . So my question is how they made big holes in preistoric time?
If you want to know more about me, ask.
I write also in another italian forum about traditional archery and the section about flintknapping is very little. I look also american site but my sensation is that they have another "style". I hope that my english will be enough good for you and I excuse me in advance for my bad english.
best regards
Ligera

Welcome, please feel free to post as many questions as you like, also let us know about Italian knapping, a subject we would be really interested in.

If you could put a link to the post with the 'big' machine in it, it would be helpful.

As for making holes in the wood, were you using dry wood or green wood? Making holes in green wood is pretty easy with a flint tools but as soon as the wood starts drying it gets hard.

About hole, in my case i choose a dry piece of wood for working with fire but the hole became much bigger than I expect.
If I learn how to charge photos I will post

Have you tried a flint drill, used with a bowdrill, hand drill or even pump drill? Works extremely well with dry wood.

I've seen several rigs like that before for taking flakes from blade cores, they're becoming popular these days. As far as I know it's entirely a product of experimental archaeology not based on any finds.

Interesting image, I have seen other American Indian knapping devices, they were quite creative. One was like a woodeon pair of plier or pincers.

Alleluja.
Like you can see the hole become too large. May use pine glue to fill the space?

I don't think glue will help, as soon as you hit something it will unstick. I'd pack the gaps with thin wood chips.

I used just a little ( what you may see in the photos), but there is also some sistem to tie the flint?
How many cm or inch you left at the side of the stone or on the side of the hole?
The first part I used only abo tools and one of my  the little axe I broke during work, however I watch your job/tools and they are beautifull.
By the way I ask how to hafting Knife on wood handle? I have one to do
like Otzi style but is hard to do using just filological tools....

To strengthen the axe I would bind it with cord or leather, though I would use a lot more than in the picture.

For hafting knives, about halfway down the page here.

Hi Ligera, I would like to try to work a handle with flint but it would be better to work green, wet wood with flint.
I usually dry out my wood before shaping them to avoid any splits or shrinkage, dry wood is much harder to work so that's why I tend to use steel tools.

Thanks. There are the 2 way to work wood in archery, dry and wet, and the matter at this point could be infinite story....
But i don't want to start these argoment here. I make a bow with flint tool and still work and the wood was seasoned.
I try to straighten green the rods  with fire and all was craked for the long side. Bad experiment.... So my
experience teach me that working green wood is not a reliable work.....
I know steel work better but in past how they do? How they use flint chisel? Just on green wood?
made a flint tools or knife is not hard for me now but i looking for experimentation.
What I learn now for sure is that they had many many many free time and doesn't cost nothing...
