Ivory coloured rhyolite
Hi all! I absolutely love the look of the ancient cream coloured rhyolite arrow heads. I read that the stone for many of these artifacts was originally quarried at various locations throughout north America. Does anyone know about any European locations where a similar stone can be found? My plan is to make a knife blade as well as an axe head if I can get hold of some of it.

Re: Ivory coloured rhyolite
Hi welcome to the forum.
I understand that in the areas or North America the Amerindians used Rhyolite they used it because their was absolutely no other material available, it was a last resort material.
I got hold of some Red/Yellow Rhyolite from Ebay many years ago, but couldn't get anything out of it, it was virtually unknappable.
I don't know of any European sources but it seem very common in Europe, it's igneous and seems to be beside granite, maybe granite quarries would have some.
Also you could try enquiring at this Cambridge based shop.

As an alternative material you could use white novaculite. It knaps great, is beautiful, and has a satin finish.

Hi Grendel, Thanks for the tips. The Novaculite looks really nice. I'm going to have
a go at getting hold of some.

If I'm not mistaken, the bluestones, of Stonehenge fame, are formed from rhyolite. It's generally coarser than what I would assume you can knap, but I don't know. There is plenty of it lying about on the beaches around St Davids in West Wales

Re: Ivory coloured rhyolite
Novaculite is really good knapping rock especially when heat treated, never had any Rhyolite to try though. You could try "Johnstone" (google it) which is what the American knappers call toilet porcelain, I kid you not old cisterns are workable although I would give it a good wash first!
It's a bit like knapping an extra strong trebor mint but has a nice whitish colour.
