Hi,

My name is Martin, from South Wales. Always been interested in rocks and so on, but recently become more interested in working flint. I've watched some Youtube videos and had a go, with some success. Looking forward to taking things further, time allowing, this year.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum, you'll have to post some pics of what you knap.

I heard it is hard to find knappable material in Wales.

Yes, that seems to be the case. Fortunately, I found myself walking near a place where they once used to break ships up, and found some beautiful dark flint nodules up to 6" across in what I presume was the ballast. It was starting to work with lovely material like that that made me want to find some more!

That's interesting I live near the Thames, there's a ships breakers yard there, I've found the same black flint and have several nodules in the garden, thought it's not the best quality. I guess they used the bad flint as ballast. Just up the river is another location where they knapped gun flint for the ships, the beach is covered in discarded gun flint core, the same black flint only high quality.

I also found half a porthole in the breaker's yard one day. Made a great foot long biface.
