Extra Terrestrial Knapping
Just started reading Man the Toolmaker by Kenneth Oakely a rather old book published by the British Museum in the 50's. In it he makes rather an interesting comment, "Yellow-green glass of apparent meteoric origin in the Libyan Desert was used by the Late Palaeolithic Aterians." He doesn't give any more info.
I was sceptical, I've seen Tektite and it all seemed to be black charred stuff however.

Re: Extra Terrestrial Knapping
Hi Grendel
Desert Glass is the resulting melted sand which is formed after the impact of a meteorite (so a sort of tektite) and it is a strange, transparent yellowish/green colour. Recently there have been several authentic knapped points made from this stuff for sale on eBay.
Cheers

those bits of glass in the link are smart but a bit pricey for me.

There is glass naturally formed in the desert when lightning strikes sand and fuses a chunk together, this was also used to make tools.
Ol' Man the toolmaker by Kennith P. Oakley was ahead of it's time, and is still informative. How did you come by your copy? mine was from a charity shop many many moons ago!

They're for sale on Amazon for a penny each.
At a charity book shop, what the *** was it doing there? We never get any of these finds you make at charity shops down here. I did however pick up a 1956 copy of Stonehenge by RJC Atkinson in a secondhand bookshop in Rangoon many years ago.
