Definately a quality piece of recycling, i'd have done the same too!  By chain drilling i guess you mean a close series of drill holes to form the slot?

I'd never have thought of nail files/buffers either for finishing either, they must go way over 600 grit and one can just steal them off of the Mrs, therby also gaining a little vengeance for years of razor theft and plug-hole hair.  Sweet!
