The last time I wandered around the old bottle dump the gods of knapping material fortune smiled on me and I found a few fragments of the mithical Carrera glass! This glass was made in the first half of the 20th Century in big panes (circa 10mm thick) to clad buildings, the perfect (and cheaper) alternative to polished marble. Some are swirls of earthy colour to emulate stone but the bits I found are dark purple - almost black. Find it if you can as it is marvellous to pressure flake into pointy goodness.

This is the carrera glass knapping so far, given the thickness it lends itself to slightly larger pieces than little arrowheads. It looks rather like black obsidian untill you get the light behind it!

I have found a source for modern carrera glass: http://www.gwent-tiles.com/Glass-Carrara-Gris-20-x-45
A nice grey marbled stone effect, I hope they sell small amounts as a meter square of the stuff is rather a lot for knapping!

That's a great find, I do wonder how thick they are though.

You have to be careful with glass tiles, they tend to have a colour coating on the back of clear glass rather than coloured glass all the way through, the gwent carrera tiles may be of the same construction, some inquiries to the folk who sell them may be the way to go. Who would have thought getting some flat coloured glass would be so difficult, I have tried... Mad

Even some plain glass thick enough to knap would be nice.

That would be great, I've been after some thick glass for a while now. I'm looking to develop this idea.
