Just back from Caistor St Edmund Quarry, the place Mr H went on his last trip. People there were really friendly and helpful, seems to be same at all Needham quarries. Picked up a bootful of the flint that was quarried there. It's blacker than the bluer stuff at Castle Acre and appears to have less inclusions. They didn't have any of the gnarled brown flint Mr H got on his trip but its source is apparently Newport Quarry, people in another topic were wondering what the flint quality was like there. Out front they have the largest piece of flint I have ever seen. I also popped in Ingham Quarry along the way, just in case they'd started quarrying again. Sadly it's filled in and there's only a landfill there now.

Had a little knap today, It's very hard and dry flint. Not as good quality as Ingham but music better than Castle Acre. Knapped three pieces, first piece was average quality got a flaked axe out of it, second piece very poor fell to pieces from frost fractures, third piece excellent quality, got a decent Beaker Dagger from it.

Yay! Good to see you made the trip. The really good flint from there is tricky to find as it's so caked in chalk. Mind you it's nice to be spoilt for choice for once...
